Abhinandan Varthaman is a retired Indian Air Force (IAF) officer.
He was awarded the Vir%20Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award, for his bravery during the 2019 India–Pakistan standoff.
On 27 February 2019, while flying a Mikoyan-Gurevich%20MiG-21 Bison, he engaged Pakistani fighter jets that were attempting to target Indian military installations.
During the aerial engagement, it is believed that he shot down a Pakistan%20Air%20Force F-16 with his MiG-21 Bison, before his own aircraft was hit.
Ejecting from his damaged aircraft, he landed in Pakistani-administered Kashmir and was captured by Pakistani forces.
He was held in Pakistani custody for approximately 60 hours before being released and returned to India at the Wagah%20Border.
